An interior with shelves full of bonds and little sacks, piled up and hanging from hooks, all labelled, where an attorney sits at a desk covered with papers, reading a deed held in his left hand, holding out the other to receive a coin from an elderly man, who stands to left, hat in hand, leaning forwards attentively, watched by a young man, while a woman and two other men crowd curiously behing them and young boy acts as a clerk, sitting on the right. BM suggest "after a painting wrongly attributed to Holbein".

Part III: title with printed overslip, 12 numbered aquatint plates, printed en bistre (numbered 1-6 twice). Part IV: 8 plates (of 12?) plus extra two folding plates. Total 46 plates. Boards detached.
The four parts are: 'Le Triomphe de la Mort', with 'Triumphus Divitiarum' & 'Triumphus Paupertatis'; 'La Passion de notre Seigneur'; 'Recueil de XII Costumes Suisses Civils et Militaires, Hommes et Femmes, du Seizième Siècle'; and 'Portraits' ('8' added in pencil in blank part of title, equalling number of plates present). Compared to the BM collation, this example lacks the 'Portraits': 'Lais Corinthiaca', 'Venus et Amor' 'Johannes Frobenius' & 'Thomas Morus'. The two extra plates, an aquatint of Thomas More and his family and an etched key, are described by Brunet as 'generally wanting'.

Henry, one of the first English poets to write in the sonnet form that Shakespeare later used, was beheaded for treason by an ill and paranoid Henry.

Succeeded half-brother Edward VI (q.v.) after unsuccessful usurpation of Lady Jane Grey (q.v.). 1554, married Philip II of Spain, and sided with Spain in war with France, leading to loss of Calais in 1557, England's last continental possession. Restored Papal authority in England, repression of Protestants earned her the sobriquet "Bloody Mary".

Facing to right in biretta and robe with buttons down front. Wolsey was a cardinal and statesman, Henry VIII's lord chancellor and one of the last churchmen to play a dominant role in English political life. Wolsey's unparalleled position of trust with the King began to break down in the late 1520s but before he fell from favour Henry VIII stripped him of all his assets in the south of England, including the Archbishop's town house, York Place. Of the Cardinal's possessions York Place was the most important to the King, because the old royal palace at Westminster had been largely destroyed by fire in 1512 and Henry had been staying at Lambeth Palace as a substitute. The acquisition of York Place, renamed Whitehall, meant that the monarchy once more had an appropriate residence in Westminster. A drawing by Andrew Benjamin Lens [BM:Prints & Drawings.Regi. No.Gg,1.410] recorded as after Holbein is the same subject as ref: 13736 & 13737.
